Plant staff and neighbours notice odour and sludge first, and the volume of sludge determines how often the lagoon must be desludged. Peer-reviewed studies of Bacillus, together with the manufacturer’s own results, suggest that substantial reductions in odour, sludge and BOD₅ are possible (Section 4). Whether such reductions are achieved on Dhaka sewage is the question the trial answers. To answer it, one treated lagoon is compared with an untreated control lagoon, and success is judged against thresholds agreed in writing before dosing begins.

The trial requires no new infrastructure, no change to the plant’s process and no commitment to purchase.

2.
